Why Active Recall Beats Rereading
The most popular way to study is also one of the worst. Surveys of students find that rereading notes and textbooks is far and away the most common technique, usually followed by highlighting. Both feel productive. Both are, by the evidence, close to the bottom of the list of things that actually work.
The popularity–effectiveness inversion
In 2013, Dunlosky and colleagues published a sweeping review of learning techniques for Psychological Science in the Public Interest, grading ten common methods by how well the evidence supported them. Practice testing — retrieving answers from memory — and distributed practice — spreading study over time — were the only two rated high utility. Rereading and highlighting, the two methods students rely on most, were rated low utility.
That inversion is the whole story: the techniques people trust most are the ones that work least, and vice versa. Understanding why is what lets you stop trusting the wrong signal.
The classic experiment
The cleanest demonstration comes from Roediger and Karpicke (2006). Students read a passage, then either read it again or took a test on it (with no feedback). Five minutes later, the rereaders did slightly better — and if the experiment had stopped there, you’d conclude rereading wins. But a week later, on the test that actually mattered, the students who had tested themselves remembered far more.
The rereaders had also predicted they’d do better. They felt more confident and were wrong. That gap — high confidence, low retention — is the trap at the centre of ineffective studying.
Why retrieval works and rereading doesn’t
Rereading strengthens recognition: the material gets more familiar each pass, so it feels increasingly “known.” But familiarity in the presence of the answer tells you nothing about whether you can produce it when the answer is gone — which is what every exam, conversation, or real use of knowledge demands.
Retrieval is different in kind, not just degree. Pulling an answer out of memory:
- Strengthens the retrieval path — the effortful act of finding the memory makes it easier to find next time, in a way that passively re-reading it does not.
- Diagnoses honestly. A failed retrieval is unambiguous feedback: you didn’t know it. Rereading hides your gaps behind a comfortable sense of fluency.
- Is harder — on purpose. Robert Bjork’s concept of desirable difficulties captures the counterintuitive rule: conditions that make studying feel harder and slower often produce stronger long-term learning. The struggle to remember is doing the work.
Karpicke and Roediger put the point starkly in a 2008 Science paper titled “The Critical Importance of Retrieval for Learning”: it’s the testing, not the studying, that drives durable memory. Repeatedly restudying material you can already recall adds almost nothing; repeatedly retrieving it is what lasts.
What to do instead
You don’t have to abandon reading — you have to change what you do after it. Read to understand, then close the book and make yourself retrieve: answer questions, do a blank-page brain dump, or drill flashcards. The mechanics are in the active recall study method, and pairing retrieval with spaced repetition — so each item comes back just as it’s fading — is as close to an optimal study routine as the research offers.
The uncomfortable version of the truth: if your studying feels smooth and reassuring, it’s probably not working. If it feels like effortful remembering, it probably is.
