The Active Recall Study Method — What It Is and How to Do It
What active recall actually means
Active recall is deceptively simple: instead of looking at information, you try to retrieve it from memory before checking whether you were right. Close the book and answer the question. Cover the definition and say it out loud. Try to reproduce the diagram on a blank page.
That single shift — from reviewing to retrieving — is the difference between the study method the evidence supports and the ones most people default to. When researchers rank learning techniques by how much they actually improve retention, practice testing (the formal name for active recall) consistently lands at the top. In a large 2013 review, Dunlosky and colleagues rated it one of only two techniques (alongside spaced practice) with “high utility” across subjects, ages, and materials — while rereading and highlighting, the most popular methods, were rated “low utility.”
Why retrieving beats reviewing
The intuitive assumption is that memory works like a recording: the more times you play information back, the more firmly it’s stored. It doesn’t work that way. Each act of successful retrieval changes the memory — it strengthens the path back to it and makes the next recall easier. Reading the answer again does far less, because you never made your brain do the work of finding it.
There’s a catch that makes this hard to trust: active recall feels worse while you’re doing it. Struggling to remember is effortful and error-prone, whereas rereading is smooth and familiar. That smoothness is a trap — psychologists call it the fluency illusion, the tendency to mistake “this looks familiar” for “I can recall this.” The effort is the point. Five ways to practise active recall
- Flashcards. The purest form: the front poses a question, and you must produce the back before flipping. Cards enforce retrieval by design, which is why they’re the classic active-recall tool. (Combine them with spaced repetition and you’ve got the two highest-utility techniques working together.)
- The blank-page method (brain dump). After a study session, close everything and write down everything you can remember about the topic on a blank sheet. The gaps you find are exactly what you didn’t actually learn.
- Practice questions. Past papers, end-of-chapter problems, or questions you write yourself. Doing problems is retrieval; re-reading worked solutions is not.
- Teach it (the Feynman technique). Explain the topic out loud, in plain words, as if to someone who’s never seen it. The moment you stumble is the moment you’ve found something you only recognised rather than knew.
- Closed-book summaries. Instead of highlighting as you read, read a section, close it, and summarise from memory. Only then check what you missed.
The common thread: produce the answer first, check second. Any technique that forces that order is active recall; any technique that lets you look while you “study” is not.
Where it fits
Active recall is for cementing things you’ve already understood — facts, definitions, processes, vocabulary. It’s not a substitute for the first pass of learning; you can’t retrieve something you never encoded. Understand the material first (that’s what notes are for), then use active recall to make it permanent, and spaced repetition to schedule the reviews so you retrieve each item right as it’s about to fade.
